This residential course is over 2 days with camping on-site. 8 miles from Cambridge and 50 miles from north London on a mixed organic farm set in the ‘big-sky’ country at the edge of the Fens.

 

Introduction to permaculture

A weekend course to introduce the basics of permaculture and show how this approach can be applied.

Course tutor

Graham Burnett

Graham Burnett is an experienced permaculture practioner, designer and teacher. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Permaculture Association (Britain), and holds the Diploma in Permaculture Design (Dip Perm Des). Graham is a member of the Permaculture Association’s Designers Register, and has co-run Permaculture Introductory courses, full design courses and specialist courses on vegan-organic gardening and compost toilet building, as well as workshops for, amongst others, Organiclea, Naturewise, Green Adventure, Birmingham Decoy, Ars Terra (Los Angeles), Vegan Organic Network, Plan-It Earth, Permorganics, Thrive (the therapeutic horticulture organisation), Transition Town Brixton ABUNDANCE,  South East Essex Organic Gardeners and Southend Council’s Agenda 21 forum.

Who is the course for?

The course is open to anyone. No prior knowledge of permaculture is 
needed.

 

What will the course cover?

The course will give you a grounding in the basics of permaculture principles and ethics, and how to apply these in a variety of settings, such as gardening, farming, building, community work or simply greener living. There will also be practical hands-on elements doing some permaculture tasks on the farm, and discussing design options that could be applied.

 

 Costs

£100 – Waged 
£80 – Low-waged 
£60 – Unwaged. 
Fees include tuition, overnight camping, meals from Saturday breakfast to Sunday lunch (please bring some food to share on Friday evening), refreshments, handouts and information sheets. 
Food will be organic and locally produced wherever possible, and vegetarian where applicable. Please let us know of any dietary requirements.

 

Accommodation

This is a weekend course. Participants are welcome to 
stay on the farm overnight on the Friday and Saturday where we can enjoy a fire 
and each others company. You will need to bring a tent and bedding 
etc.

Transport

Lift shares can be arranged via https://www.liftshare.com/uk/ post 
your details and join up with others taking the same route.

 

Cycling

Cycling takes about 45 minutes from central Cambridge, it’s a pleasant cycle ride and is very flat.

 

Buses

The Citi7 can be caught from Cambridge and stops in Cottenham. The bus stop is about 40 minutes walk from the farm, through the village and countryside, but if the walk doesn’t appeal please let us know if you intend to arrive by bus as we can collect you from the village.

 

Train

The closest train station to the farm is Waterbeach, which is 6.5 miles away (see http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl) so could be cycled from. Please let us know if you intend to come by train and have no means of travelling from the station; we will collect you.

If you’re coming by car, the postcode is CB24 8UP

Those coming from the M11;

At junction 14, exit toward Newmarket/A14 (E)/Ely/A10

Merge onto A428

Continue onto A14

At junction 32, take the B1049 exit to Cambridge

 

 

At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto B1049/Cambridge Rd

Continue to follow B1049 through Histon and into Cottenham

At the mini roundabout at the green bear right

At the mini roundabout go straight on

Bear left at the church

Turn left onto Smithy Fen and take care over the narrow bridge

Follow single track road all the way down and turn left onto Oxholme Drove at a right hand bend

Drive to end and enter Fen End Farm
